Fire Extinguishers
Do you refill fire extinguishers?
Absolutely! We refill them every day. A routine on-the-spot refill
takes about 15-20 minutes. Naturally, there are some exceptions
and many extinguishers on the market are not refillable.
How should I use a fire extinguisher?
Remember this easy code:
P - Pull the pin
A - Aim at the base of the fire
S - Squeeze the lever
S - Sweep the powder from left to right.
Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep!
What kind of chemical is in a fire extinguisher?
Different types have different chemicals. ABC Dry Chemical is the most common multi-purpose fire extinguisher. These are the ratings:
A-Type: (Ordinary Combustibles): wood, paper, cloth, and trash
B-Type: (Flammable Liquids); gasoline, oil and paint
C-Type: (Safe for Use on Energized Electrical Fires)
Can be used without danger of shock or electrocution
D-Type: (Combustible metals such as magnesium, potassium
and powdered aluminum)
K-Type: (Cooking media such as oils and fats)

What kind of maintenance is needed on my fire extinguisher?
As with all life-saving devices, a fire extinguisher should be properly maintained. National Fire Code requires the following for most types of extinguishers: annual inspection, refill and service every 6 years, refill and hydro test every 12 years.
Why do I need to service my fire equipment?
It is required to properly maintain the fire equipment per NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) As a customer you want your fire equipment in good condition so that when it is called upon it will work.
Hydro testing and CO2 tanks
What is a hydro test?
A hydrostatic (or hydro) test includes a detailed visual inspection of the interior and exterior of your cylinder. The cylinder is also water-pressure tested to 5/3 of the rated pressure - thus ensuring its integrity.
How long does a hydro test take?
Due to the nature of the hydro test, it generally takes 3-5 business days. Next-day service is available at an additional charge.
What kind of tanks do you fill?
United Fire fills C02, ABC, BC, breathing air, SCOTT, MSA tanks, nitrogen, Halon, clean agents, Intergen, FE36, Water Chemical (Class K), FFFP Foam, Water Mist, AFFF, Purple K, Pressure Water and Class D.

What type of alarm do you service?
United Fire services alarms that are hooked up to a fire suppression system. i.e. Clean Agent (FM200®, Inergen®, Co2)

Do you rebuild fire pumps?
Our truck maintenance department does repair Monday thru Friday 7:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. Repair financing is available upon request.
